ESNM Visiting Fellowship 2026
The European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) is pleased to announce the launch of the ESNM Visiting Fellowship 2026. This fellowship programme offers young clinicians the opportunity to spend two weeks at a recognised ESNM host centre to advance their expertise in neurogastroenterology and gastrointestinal motility, foster international collaboration, and promote excellence in motility care across Europe.
1. Aim of the Programme
▪︎ Enhance expertise in neurogastroenterology and motility disorders
▪︎ Facilitate structured exposure to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques
▪︎ Promote harmonisation of clinical and basic science standards across Europe
▪︎ Support knowledge transfer to the fellow’s home institution
▪︎ Foster long-term collaboration between ESNM centres
Particular emphasis is placed on the implementation of acquired knowledge and skills in the fellow’s home institution.
2. Fellowship Conditions
▪︎ Number of grants: 5
▪︎ Grant amount: up to €2,000 per fellow
▪︎ Duration: 2 weeks
▪︎ Fellowship period: between June 2026 and May 2027
The grant is intended to contribute towards travel and accommodation expenses.
Host centres will participate without charge and provide structured clinical or basic science exposure under the supervision of a designated mentor.
Important notes:
▪︎ Insurance, visa arrangements, travel logistics, accommodation, and leave of absence are the responsibility of the fellow.
▪︎ ESNM cannot be held liable for activities, health, or safety during the fellowship period.
3. Eligibility Criteria
▪︎ Be members of ESNM or affiliated with an ESNM member society
▪︎ Be working in neurogastroenterology, gastroenterology, digestive surgery, or related disciplines
▪︎ Be in the final year of clinical or basic science training/PhD, or within two years after completion
▪︎ Be fluent in English (minimum B2 level or equivalent)
▪︎ Select a host centre different from their home institution (preferably in another country)
▪︎ Not have previously received an ESNM Visiting Fellowship Each applicant may participate in the programme only once.
4. Host Centres
Host centres are recognised ESNM-affiliated institutions with expertise in neurogastroenterology and motility.
▪︎ A designated clinical or basic science mentor
▪︎ Structured observational and/or supervised clinical or basic science exposure
▪︎ Access to relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
5. Application Requirements
▪︎ Application Form: Personal contact details and top three preferred host centres.
▪︎ Curriculum Vitae (max 1 page): Training history, experience, publications, language skills.
▪︎ Motivation Letter (max 1 page): Objectives, expected benefits, and implementation plan.
▪︎ Letter of Recommendation (max 1 page): Signed by Head of Department, confirming status and leave.
6. Selection Process
▪︎ Clinical or basic science experience (0–5 points)
▪︎ Clarity and feasibility of objectives (0–8 points)
▪︎ Impact and implementation plan (0–10 points)
▪︎ Overall quality (0–7 points)
Final selection also considers geographical balance and equitable opportunities. Decisions are final.
7. Reporting Requirements
▪︎ Short report (½–1 page)
▪︎ Completed feedback form
Fellows may be invited to present their experience or contribute via ESNM communication channels.
8. Application Timeline
